As the fossil based energy resources are being quickly depleted, there is an urgent need to investigate new alternative energy resources. The main topic of this project is solar energy, which provides all of the yearly consumption of world’s energy needs in a mere one hour of exposure to the earth surface. The emission of greenhouse gases will be reduced when the solar power is used instead of fossil based energy sources. The solar power sources are the best candidates for the solutions of global warming which is getting more important nowadays. If we can convert this solar energy to electrical energy in an efficient way our country, which is quite lucky in terms of solar energy, will be able to use this power source. As we told above our county is very rich in terms of solar energy but we are not that rich in terms of the technology and knowledge needed to convert this solar energy to electrical energy. Especially the silicon based solar modules are not produced but exported to our country.
The silicon based solar cells are worked on since long years and has a very settled technology, but as they have a very limited conversion efficiency new research are done on silicon based photovoltaic systems. The typical performance of organic material based solar cells has a maximum power conversion efficiency of only 4%. However these materials are not resistant to high energy levels and the life time is quite limited with respect to other technologies the application areas of this kind of solar cells are very limited. Therefore currently most of the research effort is spent on new semiconductor materials which will provide high power conversion efficiency. America, Europe and Asia have already started new projects for the research of this kind of new semiconductor materials.
As our country has missed the development period of silicon technology, this project will give our country the chance of catching the new technology of high efficient high technology solar cells based on new semiconductor materials. With this aim, during this project high efficient new and intelligent solar cells will be developed. By developing new and intelligent semiconductor materials, the current 10% conversion efficiency of solar cells will be increased to the levels of 50%, which is the theoretical limit for these devices. The fist phase of the project is to design of the materials which absorb most of the solar power. Also during this phase, the epitaxial growth of these materials will be done for the first time in our country. The next step will be the fabrication of the solar cells with this material with nano and micro fabrication technologies. This step will give us the chance to develop the high technology in our country. The next step will be the characterization of these solar cells. These cells will then be adapted in the solar arrays by the industrial partner of this project. Then the optical and electrical characterization of the solar array module prototypes will be done. At the end of the project the efficiency of the solar array module prototypes will be measured.
